LOVER’S LANE |SARAH AND JAYDEN18 Jun 2020
Introducing our Lover’s Lane series, where we take a trip down memory lane with some of our fave clients and relive their wedding day with them…
The next best thing to getting an invite to one of our client’s weddings (not a hint, we promise…) is living their special day vicariously through them. Sarah and Jayden take us down Lover’s Lane with a peek into their wedding day, as well as how they met.
So, first things first – how did you both meet?
Actually, we met when we were around the age of 12. Jay’s father coached our brothers in junior rugby league for many years. Our families became friends, seeing a lot of each other, particularly during the football season. Fast forward to when we were 17 and our paths crossed again when I became friends with Jay’s best friend, Josh. After spending many months building a beautiful friendship, we eventually progressed to ‘more than friends’. The rest, as they say, is history!
What would we have witnessed at the scene of your wedding proposal?
We’d talked many times about getting engaged, although it always felt like a fantasy. Both our families have always holidayed in Forster as long as we can remember – it is such a special place for us both. I’d been in Forster with my family and Jay was joining me after my family left. Jay’s mother bought us a picnic rug and beach chairs for Christmas and we thought it would be nice to have dinner on the sand dune at One Mile Beach, however we were so wrong! When we arrived, the wind was crazy – it was basically a sand storm!
I didn’t know at the time, but Jay had planned to propose that night, however we ended up leaving the beach and ate our dinner at the Marina instead.
As we didn’t get to enjoy our picnic as planned, Jay suggested we get up early to watch the sunrise the following day. I reluctantly woke up before sunrise and we returned to the sand dune. It was so calm, not a breath of wind – or person – in sight. As we watched the most magnificent sunrise, Jay said to me, “There is only one thing that would make this morning better”, to which I answered “Dolphins!” In that moment, I did actually see dolphins, but Jay’s mind was elsewhere, as he placed the ring in front of me and asked me to marry him.
Honestly, I froze and didn’t know how to express all my emotion – I was in shock! A few moments passed and we couldn’t help but cry with joy. We shared the most beautiful morning together, walking along the beach, taking in the fact that we were now engaged.
Tell us a little about how you came to choose the location for your wedding.
For us, the location of our wedding was never a question! I grew up on our beautiful family property in Glendon Brook in the Hunter Valley, and we always knew there was no other place on Earth we’d rather get married. Jay and I have shared many precious memories on our family property, and our wedding is now the most special of all!
What month did you get married, and why did you choose this time of year?
We decided to get married in March, as traditionally it’s the season our property is most stunning. In saying that, we were very anxious in the lead up to our wedding, as we were enduring one of our worst droughts in history. In February, we were blessed with beautiful rainfall and on our wedding day our property looked better than ever!
How many guests attended your wedding? Did you have a dress code?
120 guests attended our wedding and our dress code was cocktail.
Please set the scene for your special day – What was the weather like? What were you feeling? Were you nervous?
On the day of our wedding, we were greeted with a beautiful sunrise and not a cloud in the sky… however that didn’t last very long! As we anticipated, the clouds crept over and we experienced mist-like rain. In the lead up to our wedding, we monitored the weather very closely, however, instead of bringing worry and anxiety, the rain brought a sense of comfort and cosiness as we got ready together. For our family, rain has always been a blessing on our property, and on our wedding day it made the landscape so tranquil and lush.
Before our wedding day, I felt an array of different emotions. I processed all my nerves then, so on the day itself, I felt genuinely calm and couldn’t wait to walk down the isle. On the other hand, Jay experienced his nerves on the day as reality hit and he realised… “Wow, this is actually happening!”
What was the feel and style that you were going for on your special day?
We wanted our wedding to compliment the beautiful landscape of our property and its surroundings. Our style was elegant with light, neutral colour tones, complimented by the lush greenery in our floral arrangements. We endeavoured to make our guests feel welcome, loved and appreciated. As our wedding entered into the night, we wanted everyone to fully embrace the celebrations and dance the night away!
Which style of KataLane marquee did you choose and why? What was your first impression when you walked up to your marquee?
Jay and I chose the Kismet Hamptons Marquee – incredible doesn’t even begin to describe its beauty! We loved its’ size, as we wanted our guests to have space to move around freely.
We were in absolute awe of our marquee, it was everything we dreamt of and it suited the landscape perfectly. Our marquee captured the natural light throughout the day and when night fell, its glow was spectacular. Also, we loved the addition of the timber flooring!
What was the song for your first dance as husband and wife?
Our first dance song was “I Wanna Dance with Somebody” – by Matt Alber. We immediately fell in love with his version of this song – you couldn’t help but sing along and feel the urge to join in!
Any memorable or funny stories?
There are so many, but one in particular stands out. Our gorgeous border collie Oscar stood with our groomsman for the wedding ceremony. Just as Jay and I met at the arbour, he managed to wriggle out of his collar and my poor brother (who was also Jay’s groomsman) had to discreetly chase Oscar to bring him back. Luckily, Jay’s father managed to grab Oscar before he went too far!
Do you have a favourite moment from the day?
If we had to narrow it down to a few, it would be the beginning of the ceremony when Jay and I met at the arbour, the beautiful speeches from our loved ones during the reception, and seeing our guests choose to embrace the rain and make the most of our outdoor dance floor.
What would you say to couples thinking about hiring a marquee for their own wedding?
KataLane have completed changed the game for marquee weddings! They go above and beyond to make your vision a reality. Without a doubt, every couple should consider a marquee for their wedding – a KataLane marquee will enhance the atmosphere of your wedding and make it stand out from the rest!
We are extremely thankful we could share our wedding experience with the KataLane team. The only problem we have now is finding an excuse to hire a marquee so we can keep in contact with the beautiful team!
Thank you Sarah and Jayden for your lovely words, and for taking a trip down Lover’s Lane with us!
